Ingredients
Scale
- For the Cookies:
- 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
- 1 teaspoon milk
- For the Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2–3 tablespoons milk
- Food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs and flavoring: Add eggs, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using), and beat until combined.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Add milk to help bring the dough together.
- Shape the dough: Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place them 2 inches apart on the baking sheets. Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass or your hand.
- Bake: Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Make the frosting: While the cookies cool, beat the softened butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk together until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk if needed.
- Frost the cookies: Once cookies are completely cooled, spread the frosting on top, and add food coloring if desired.
- Serve and enjoy: Decorate with sprinkles or other toppings and let the frosting set before serving.
Notes
- Storage: Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4-5 days. For longer storage, freeze the cookies (unfrosted) for up to 3 months.
- Customization: Feel free to add sprinkles, edible glitter, or colored frosting for different occasions or holidays.
- Dough Chilling: If the dough is too sticky, refrigerate it for 30 minutes before shaping into balls.
