Soft Frosted Sugar Cookies are a delightful, melt-in-your-mouth treat with a tender texture and a sweet, creamy frosting. Perfect for holidays, parties, or any occasion, these cookies are a crowd favorite. The simple yet flavorful dough is topped with a colorful frosting, making them as fun to decorate as they are to eat!

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Cookies:
    • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
    • ½ teaspoon baking soda
    • ¼ teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
    • 2 large eggs
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
    • 1 teaspoon milk
  • For the Frosting:
    • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 4 cups powdered sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 23 tablespoons milk
    • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs and flavoring: Add eggs, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using), and beat until combined.
  • Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Add milk to help bring the dough together.
  • Shape the dough: Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place them 2 inches apart on the baking sheets. Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass or your hand.
  • Bake: Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Make the frosting: While the cookies cool, beat the softened butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk together until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk if needed.
  • Frost the cookies: Once cookies are completely cooled, spread the frosting on top, and add food coloring if desired.
  • Serve and enjoy: Decorate with sprinkles or other toppings and let the frosting set before serving.

Notes

  • Storage: Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4-5 days. For longer storage, freeze the cookies (unfrosted) for up to 3 months.
  • Customization: Feel free to add sprinkles, edible glitter, or colored frosting for different occasions or holidays.
  • Dough Chilling: If the dough is too sticky, refrigerate it for 30 minutes before shaping into balls.
